April and warmer weather are here, which means discounted outdoor essentials will dominate this month’s sales. Since Easter was early this year, some spring fashion deals ended in April beginning and initiatives like Earth Day and spring cleaning will set the tone for discounts on sustainable items and cleaning supplies for the rest of April.

What to buy in April

New video games often release during this season, so there are sales on older video games.  RetailMeNot shopping expert Sara Skirboll has said, “Video games, on average, are going to be around 29-percent off.” Retailers like GameStop and Target usually run sales on older inventory. There may also be great shoe sales, especially on children’s shoes. Expect stores like Foot Locker and Converse to offer discounts of 23% and above.

Smarty founder and consumer savings expert Vipin Porwal said that cleaning and home decor items could likely go on sale this month as people look to revamp their homes. The discounts could be the highest on cleaning supplies like vacuum cleaners. Multiple retailers, including Walmart, Kohl’s, and Macy’s, could sell window treatments, home accents, area rugs, and bedding at 20%-40% off. Porwal further added that home improvement retailers like Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Ace Hardware could offer discounts of 20% or more on yard and gardening tools as people prepare for gardening and lawn prep projects because of the warmer weather.

With Earth Day (April 22) just around the corner, expect amazing deals on natural, sustainable, and organic items, especially all-natural health and beauty products and green cleaning supplies. Beauty retailers like Ulta and Sephora will offer major discounts on their skincare and makeup products. Discounts of up to 30% or more are likely on specific eco-friendly items, such as air purifiers and bidet sets, from brands like Molekule and Bio Bidet.

What to avoid buying in April

Some types of items you shouldn’t buy during April include:

  • mattresses (typically go on sale during long weekends as people want to “go in-store to touch and feel the product they will be sleeping on”)
  • furniture (the best deals are usually at the year beginning or during long weekends like Labor Day or Memorial Day)
